Students did not sing National Anthem in Chinese, police report filed for investigation

The school reported the case on April 4 and asked the police to intervene in the investigation.

Administrative Officer of San Min Primary School 1 in Telik Intan, stated that allegations made by a pro-Perikatan Nasional (PN) social media influencer accusing the school’s students of singing the national anthem in Chinese are entirely false and maliciously distorted. The school filed a police report on April 4, urging authorities to investigate and clarify the truth.

In a statement issued today, Han explained that the video in question was recorded on June 6, 2024, during a dragon dance launch ceremony at the school attended by Perak State Executive Councilor Woo Kah Leong. He emphasized that the students in the video were singing the Perak State Anthem, not the national anthem, and performed it entirely in the national language (Malay).

“While the melody of the Perak State Anthem is identical to the national anthem, the lyrics are entirely different. The students were clearly singing the state anthem, not a so-called ‘Chinese version of the national anthem.’ Accusing the school of altering the national anthem is utterly baseless and irresponsible,” Han stressed.

He noted that after the video circulated widely online, it sparked a wave of false narratives and malicious attacks, causing significant distress and psychological pressure on the school’s staff and students while severely damaging the institution’s reputation.

“If such allegations continue to escalate, they will disrupt the harmonious environment of the school and potentially fuel unnecessary misunderstandings and divisions in society. We filed a police report at the Lower Perak District Police Headquarters on April 4, urging authorities to investigate under Section 504 of the Penal Code (intentional insult) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (misuse of network facilities),” Han added.

Han emphasized that freedom of speech online should not be weaponized for malicious sensationalism or defamation. “Schools are institutions of education and should not be dragged into political disputes or used as tools to attack political opponents,” he said.

“We hope the public will discern the truth and urge content creators to verify information before publishing. Do not spread unverified claims lightly, as this could harm innocent parties,” he concluded.
