KUCHING: The Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) 2013 results unveiled yesterday saw Sarawak achieving its best ever record in the exam in 11 years.
In announcing the results, Education Department director Datu Abdillah Adam said the state recorded an average grade (GPN) of 2.52, which was the best since 2003.
He said in 2012, 2011, 2009 and 2005, the GPN for Sarawak was 2.57 while the second and third best achievements for the state were in 2007 and 2010 when the GPN was 2.53 and 2.54 respectively.
He added that this year, 84 schools in the state achieved 100 per cent pass in the exam, saying 76 of them were Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) and the other eight were Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC).
He also revealed that 37 schools achieved a pass rate between 90 and 99.9 per cent while 135 others recorded a pass rate between 80 and 89.9 per cent.
“This year, 4.49 per cent or 1,916 out of the total 42,665 students from government and government aided schools scored straight ‘A’ in all subjects they sat for compared with 4.40 per cent or 2,010 out of the total 45,946 students sitting for the examination in 2012,” he said when making the announcement at SK Matang Jaya here.
He revealed that of the 1,916 students who scored ‘A’ in all subjects, 1,386 were from SK and the rest from SKJC schools.
The schools with the most number of students who scored straight ‘As’ in all subjects were SK (A) Datuk Hj Abdul Kadir Hassan, Kuching with 61 students followed by SK St Teresa (43), SJK Chung Hua Krokop (37), SK St Anne, Sarikei (35), SK Methodist Sibu (two streams) (35), SK Satria Jaya, Kuching (31), SJK Tung Hua, Sibu (31), SK RPR Jln Astana Kuching (30), SK Jalan Bintang Miri (30), SK Green Road Kuching (29), SK Matang Jaya, Padawan (27), SK St Joseph Miri (26), SK St Joseph Kuching (25), SJK Chung Hua No. 4 Kuching (25) and SJK Chung Sing Sibu (24).
“Among the 15 top schools based on GPN for those having more than 50 students, SK (A) Datuk Hj Abdul Kadir Hassan recorded a GPN of 1.42, SK St. Teresa (1.47), SK Agama Sibu (1.53) while SK Matang Jaya achieved 1.83.”
The result announcement was attended by State Education Department officials, teachers and parents of SK Matang Jaya.
Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah was also present.
